What’s up everyone! With Week 1 matchups around the corner, there are key games that weigh a team’s CFP opportunity while trap games become a consequence because a team is too focused on bigger matchups instead of focusing on what’s in front of them. Here are the Keys and Traps for the Top 25. These teams must brave the obstacles as their schedule beefs up to where every game must be treated like it was their last game of the season.

25) MISSOURI

KEY MATCHUP: #5 TEXAS AND #10 OKLAHOMA

For a team trying to make a jump to the CFP, these two rivalry matchups at home gives them a shot. All it takes is keeping their new quarterback Austin Simmons healthy.

TRAP GAME: AT ARKANSAS

Mizzou’s November schedule could either make or break their CFP opportunity. In comes Arkansas with a new coach and a bevy of transfers that could complicate their situation.

24) LOUISVILLE

KEY MATCHUP: #9 OLE MISS (NASHVILLE)

This is an early measuring stick for Louisville and a key win against Ole Miss can kick off their CFP opportunity prior to ACC play.

TRAP GAME: AT SYRACUSE

They lost to Syracuse back in 2022. Syracuse figures to be in better position with their quarterback returning healthy. Louisville’s coming off a competitive 4-game run and are coming up on a bye. Wear and tear might be there just in time for the Orange to blindside them.

23) HOUSTON

KEY MATCHUP: AT #12 TEXAS TECH

A Friday night game to look forward to as Houston could get to Texas Tech if they don’t have an answer at quarterback.

TRAP GAME: AT COLORADO OR AT WEST VIRGINIA

Either matchup could shake Houston’s confidence. Colorado might have things figured out, and West Virginia upsetting Houston derailed their Big 12 title hopes last season. They can’t get too confident as a middling team.

22) IOWA

KEY MATCHUP: #1 OHIO STATE

Kinnick Stadium is Ohio State’s bugaboo. Their last loss was 2017 in a turnover bonanza. Iowa’s looking for another rare opportunity to shock the college football world.

TRAP GAME: AT ILLINOIS

Iowa has Nebraska in the last game of the season. Prior to that, they travel to Champagne, Illinois. They might get too distracted and the Fighting Illini might have them right where they want them.

21) UTAH

KEY MATCHUP: #14 BYU

The Holy War is always the biggest matchup of the season. Despite losing Kyle Whittingham and their offensive coordinator, it’s still right for them to right the ship and take control of the Big 12.

TRAP GAME: AT CINCINNATI

Prior to the Holy War, they travel to Cincinnati unaware of what to expect. This is not a good thing for the Utes to get distracted knowing Cincinnati has nothing to lose.

20) TENNESSEE

KEY MATCHUP: #13 ALABAMA

There are other key matchups I could’ve considered, but Alabama’s almost always the matchup Tennessee wants to prove themselves. The third Saturday of October is the momentum shift that the Volunteers need as they approach November.

TRAP GAME: AT ARKANSAS

Prior to Alabama, they might get caught sleeping on a team with nothing to lose in Fayetteville. If Tennessee slips up with a young QB, this could ruin their CFP opportunity before facing Alabama.

19) SMU

KEY MATCHUP: AT FLORIDA STATE

It’s only Week 1, but it’s best to find out how the ACC will shape up. Florida State hasn’t looked like themselves while SMU’s looking to get really comfy as a potential elite team in the ACC.

TRAP GAME: WAKE FOREST

SMU’s probably peeking ahead towards Notre Dame, which isn’t good. Wake Forest is no slouch, and their defense could make SMU miserable for 60 game minutes.

18) PENN STATE

KEY MATCHUP: #14 USC

Ever since that epic USC/Penn State Rose Bowl game a decade ago, that matchup has some epicness. This one’s different with Matt Campbell as the new Penn State coach. If anyone remembers, Lincoln Riley and Matt Campbell faced off as an Oklahoma and Iowa State coach respectively. Lincoln Riley’s 4-2 against Campbell, but the 2 losses are nothing to be happy about. Very critical game.

TRAP GAME: AT NORTHWESTERN

Prior to USC is that elusive Friday Night matchup in the Chicago area. Why is this important at all? Friday Night is always an upset special and Penn State’s looking towards the USC matchup. Northwestern upset Penn State last season and sent Drew Allar on IR that game too. Not a pretty sight to see.

17) WASHINGTON

KEY MATCHUP: AT #14 USC AND #2 OREGON

These two rivalry road games are huge for Washington to take a step towards a CFP opportunity or fall flat in disgrace. Even one of those wins goes a long way, but everyone must come together as a unit.

TRAP GAME: AT NEBRASKA

They could be up against Penn State in their first November game, but this is hard to look ahead when facing Nebraska on the road. It’s always a problem in the city of Lincoln.

16) MICHIGAN

KEY MATCHUP: #10 OKLAHOMA

I could’ve easily picked any other rivalry matchup, but Oklahoma’s the perfect key matchup when it comes to CFP opportunities. They really need this equalizer for Whittingham to take a step forward with his new team.

TRAP GAME: MICHIGAN STATE AND UCLA

Right in the midst of November are road games at Oregon and Ohio State (the other key matchups). Unfortunately, they must deal with rival Michigan State and Whittingham’s former Pac-12 foe UCLA. Michigan State’s Pat Fitzgerald and UCLA’s Bob Chesney may pose a problem.

T-14) BYU

KEY MATCHUP: #4 NOTRE DAME

This is ripe for the picking if BYU wants to be a CFP contender. The Catholics come to Mormon country for this holiest of holy matchups to decide who’s in control of their CFP fate.

TRAP GAME: ARIZONA STATE

BYU may be at home, but they’re not safe from the Sun Devils knowing that BYU is peeking at the Holy War. It’s an unholy thought when faced with a previous CFP team from two seasons ago.

T-14) USC

KEY MATCHUP: #2 OREGON

If USC wants control of the Big Ten, a spot in the Big Ten title game, and a playoff spot, they must defeat Oregon at home. They also need to slow down the run because that cost them last season. It’s their only chance to prove how good they are and keep Riley off the hot seat.

TRAP GAME: AT UCLA

But then there’s UCLA with Bob Chesney and Nico Iamaleava. If USC loses to them knowing how close they are to grasping a Big Ten title and CFP opportunity, it’s likely over for them and Riley’s stint in Pasadena.

13) ALABAMA

KEY MATCHUP: #3 GEORGIA

It’s always a clash between two SEC powerhouse programs. However, how much of a powerhouse are these two these days when one can’t win a CFP game and the other got obliterated in the SEC title game (to Georgia) and against Indiana in the Rose Bowl?

TRAP GAME: SOUTH CAROLINA

This is where they must lock in. They probably came off an emotional matchup against Florida State after getting embarrassed last season. South Carolina posed a problem to the Tide for two straight seasons and are looking to finally get over the Tuscaloosa hump.

12) TEXAS TECH

KEY MATCHUP: #23 HOUSTON

Tech hopes to have a quarterback by this matchup because this likely won’t be easy. Houston plans to come out firing on all cylinders, so we expect a good southern clash.

TRAP GAME: AT WEST VIRGINIA

Before Tech travels to Stillwater, they must go through Rich Rodriguez’s hard-edged Mountaineers. Where are they with the quarterback situation? If they still have little to no answer, they could be in the same predicament Houston was when they lost to West Virginia last season.

11) LSU

KEY MATCHUP: AT #9 OLE MISS

This match was circled ever since Lane Kiffin dipped for Baton Rouge. There will be no love loss when Kiffin’s forced to return to the very place he won 10-plus games multiple times and got them to their first playoff appearance (before he dipped). Maybe Ole Miss should be thanking him???

TRAP GAME: AT AUBURN

Auburn’s under new coaching management and it’s best not to overlook them. LSU could be distracted with the upcoming Alabama game and that could get complicated real fast, real quick.

10) OKLAHOMA

KEY MATCHUP: AT #3 GEORGIA

Oklahoma travels to Athens for the very first time. If any Sooner fan remembers this previous matchup in the Rose Bowl? God help me I’m not reminding us of that. This is the matchup that could tell who’s in a good spot for an SEC title run.

TRAP GAME: AT FLORIDA

Oklahoma travels to the Swamp before facing Ole Miss at home. This is where they could struggle and get blindsided. Florida’s different, but they’re very much capable of sinking the Schooner before going back home.

9) OLE MISS

KEY MATCHUP: #11 LSU AND #3 GEORGIA

Ole Miss already had this circled the moment Lane Kiffin up and went to Baton Rouge. So that’s #1. #2, the Rebels defeated Georgia twice in the last 3 meetings (including the Sugar Bowl last season) and would love nothing more than seeing the Dawgs’ SEC dominance come to an end in 2026.

TRAP GAME: AUBURN

Even though Ole Miss won the last 2 meetings, they lost the previous six meetings. They’re also coming off a challenging 3-road game slate in 4 weeks. They also face Georgia and Oklahoma after Auburn. This screams home trap game.

8) TEXAS A&M

KEY MATCHUP: #5 TEXAS

There are so many key matchups for Texas A&M, but it’ll always be Texas because…it’s their in-state rival. Once Texas announced their move to the SEC, A&M called dibs on hosting 2 seasons ago and were also a win away from their first ever SEC title appearance last season. The result: 0-2 since Texas’s SEC appearance. If they don’t turn it around, A&M’s in major trouble in the SEC and recruiting.

TRAP GAME: AT SOUTH CAROLINA

After escaping a potential major upset that could’ve ended all hopes for a potential playoff spot, they travel to South Carolina. Texas A&M may have learned their lesson after a massive 2nd half comeback, but South Carolina could school them with two elite players on each side.

7) MIAMI

KEY MATCHUP: AT #4 NOTRE DAME

This is definitely circled…mostly for Notre Dame after not only losing to Miami but getting jumped and pushed out of the CFP by them per committee decision. This matchup could likely decide a team’s CFP fate.

TRAP GAME: AT NORTH CAROLINA

It may not sound like much, but North Carolina has had Miami’s number in the last 5 meetings with the last matchup in 2023. Things may be different now, but Miami never won by more than 6 points at Chapel Hill historically. They also go to Notre Dame after, so this could be a trap game with upset on the mind that Bill Belichick’s salivating over.

6) INDIANA

KEY MATCHUP: #1 OHIO STATE

After the Big Ten championship victory, Indiana’s looking to put the nail in the coffin on Ohio State’s Big Ten dominance. Cignetti hopes to shift powers over to the program that used to be the losingest program in college football history. Oh boy!

TRAP GAME: AT NEBRASKA

Does Cignetti’s Indiana team succumb to distractions in 2026? Well…they face Ohio State after, so maybe it’s on the mind. It could play out like their Penn State matchup last season, but we’ll see if Nebraska’s Anthony Colandrea’s really for real.

5) TEXAS

KEY MATCHUP: #1 OHIO STATE

Texas has other keys, but this one’s really personal. We’re talking CFP-level personal. Maybe even National Championship-level personal. The loss last season to Ohio State started a downfall to Texas’s CFP opportunity. Prior to that, Ohio State stole Texas’s comeback opportunity thanks to Jack Sawyer’s walk off Pick-6. Ok…this is really personal.

TRAP GAME: AT #20 TENNESSEE

They go into a bye before facing Oklahoma, but it doesn’t mean distractions won’t get in their way. Depending on the Ohio State matchup result, Texas could be lulled into a trap by Tennessee that’s motivated for a CFP run.

4) NOTRE DAME

KEY MATCHUP: #7 MIAMI

Notre Dame has this matchup circled in blood with fury. They were not happy to be baited by committee and get jumped by Miami after being ahead of them in the rankings for a long time. Now, it’s very, VERY personal for the Irish.

TRAP GAME: WISCONSIN (LAMBEAU FIELD)

I can’t tell how much of a trap this is. But with Luke Fickell on the hot seat and Marcus Freeman being vulnerable in the first two weeks of the season on a consistent basis, anything can happen.

3) GEORGIA

KEY MATCHUP: AT #13 ALABAMA

There’s never a key matchup bigger than this one. Always a gauntlet matchup that determines who has the advantage for a potential SEC title. However, Bama’s regular season victory over Georgia means nothing when Georgia still makes the SEC title game while Bama fails to make the SEC title in 2024 and get trampled by the Dawgs in a rematch in the SEC title game last season. So, does this mean more…or anything? SEC may want to change to THAT motto!

TRAP GAME: AT SOUTH CAROLINA AND GEORGIA TECH

If Georgia’s pass defense doesn’t improve, LaNorris Sellers cannon arm and Nyck Harbor’s track-and-field speed could Dog the Dawgs. If Georgia Tech’s quarterback Alberto Mendoza plays up to half the level of his brother, Fernando, this will really worry SEC commissioner Greg Sankey by December.

2) OREGON

KEY MATCHUP: AT #1 OHIO STATE

When it looked like Big Ten newcomer Oregon was taking charge of that conference after defeating Ohio State before, Ohio State brought them back to reality in the 1st 12-team CFP. With the majority of their players back with an “unfinished business” mindset, Oregon’s looking for a power play.

TRAP GAME: AT MICHIGAN STATE

It’s hard to get a read on where a trap game will come from, but let’s look at Michigan State. With former Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald taking over, he could very likely put Oregon on their heels of an upset bid. If he can muster up a way to scare the Ducks’ feathers off, this could pose a major problem for Oregon’s last game of the regular season.

1) OHIO STATE

KEY MATCHUP: AT #6 INDIANA

Ohio State hasn’t forgotten about the unfortunate loss in the Big Ten title game. The lack of offensive line protection eventually led to their overall downfall. This could be the matchup to hopefully atone for their mistakes up front. This will also determine a Big Ten title contender and control of the conference.

TRAP GAME: AT NEBRASKA

Just like Indiana, Ohio State could be highly distracted knowing they’re facing “ichigan” (that word is correct by Buckeye standards) next weekend on Big Noon Saturday. If Anthony Colandrea’s the real deal for Nebraska, this could spell uh-oh for Buckeye fans.
