BRACKET AND POWER RANKINGS

Kansas City’s attempting to become the first NFL team to get a 3-Peat in the Super Bowl. The Packers, Dolphins, Steelers (x2), 49ers, Cowboys, Broncos, and the Patriots never reached the Super Bowl to attempt a 3-peat. Pittsburgh and Dallas were the closest to an attempt, but they failed in their respectful conference championships to Bay Area’s finest Raiders and 49ers. Now, Kansas City’s the first NFL team to play their third straight Super Bowl and the only team in their way for a 3-peat is the Eagles that faced them in Super Bowl LVII (57).

This post has nothing to do with this matchup or prediction. This post is about the 15 AFC teams that faced the Chiefs since the Patrick Mahomes era started. However, a few teams have optimism to turn the tide in the future…maybe. You might be surprised with a team or two on here while the rest seem obvious or meh.

15) BROWNS (0-4) – LAST WIN: 2012

Baker Mayfield can defeat Patrick Mahomes in college but in the NFL. He had two chances to defeat Kansas City in the regular season and playoffs. Unfortunately, he failed both. He was very close to a comeback win after Mahomes went down with a concussion, but the Chiefs are the Chiefs. Now, Cleveland may have nothing to work with moving forward with how things are currently vibing. With Myles Garrett wanting out, the Browns are likely bottom feeders for another decade or two in the Mahomes era.

14) JETS (0-2) – LAST WIN: 2017

While the 2020 Jets had no chance with Sam Darnold, the 2023 version may have had an answer if Aaron Rodgers didn’t tear his Achilles. The team lost by three points with Zach Wilson as the starter. Then again, Rodgers never faced Mahomes in his career, so there’s no idea how that matchup would’ve play out. Hopefully, they face each other before Rodgers inevitably retires. For now, we don’t know how New York will do, and Rodgers’ retirement will send the Jets straight to the bottom alongside Cleveland.

13) TITANS (2-2) – LAST WIN: 2021

That record during the Andy Reid/Patrick Mahomes era made sense. Why? Derrick Henry and Mike Vrabel. Them along with Ryan Tannehill and the defense played an integral part in their two wins, including a 27-3 shellacking victory. With both Henry and Vrabel gone, Tennessee likely joins the rest of the poor saps in the bottom unless the team has an answer in the offseason.

12) PATRIOTS (2-3) – LAST WIN: 2019

When Tom Brady was still a Patriot facing Patrick Mahomes, New England was 2-0 against Kansas City. After Brady left New England and eventually retired, New England went 0-3 since. Bringing in Mike Vrabel and Josh McDaniels (for the third time) was the right move when needing to develop Drake Maye and returning their defense to full strength. However, they don’t have Tom Brady at all, so the losses could continue unless Maye’s the answer in the AFC.

11) STEELERS (0-4) – LAST WIN: 2017

Before Mahomes, Kansas City struggled against Pittsburgh’s defense. After Mahomes took over, Pittsburgh couldn’t keep up with them except one time in their first meeting when they scored 37 points in that loss. Since then, they averaged just 13.6 points in the last three games. Yeah, there must be an answer or Mike Tomlin’s time with the team is done and Steelers fans are feeling that change is inevitable. If Pittsburgh had doable offense, we would’ve heard and seen the Steelers/Chiefs AFC championship game more often.

10) JAGUARS (0-5) – LAST WIN: 2009

The Jaguars got smoked in the first two meetings against Mahomes. Jacksonville figured they had an answer at quarterback with Trevor Lawrence. However, options around him weren’t effective against Kansas City’s surging defense and caused trouble for him. The surprising results in the last three meetings with Lawrence were closer than expected with the spread being 10 points or less. The Jags defense gave the offense plenty of opportunities but failed to capitalize on it. Can Jacksonville ever find an answer against Kansas City?

9) DOLPHINS (0-3) – LAST WIN: 2011

Tyreek Hill thought that Tua Tagovailoa was the better quarterback than Patrick Mahomes. It can go either way, but Mahomes is still better and Hill’s presence at Miami didn’t do much to make them a threat Kansas City. In 2020, they came up short of a comeback after being down by three scores in the 3rd quarter. In 2023, they were in close range in Europe if it wasn’t for a scoop-and-score by Kansas City. After 2020, the offense hasn’t had an answer against coach Spags’ defense and might get worse next season.

8) TEXANS (1-5) – LAST WIN: 2019

Houston won their first meeting in 2019 against Patrick Mahomes after overcoming a 17-3 deficit in the first quarter. They outscored them 24-7 to seal the comeback win. If anyone remembers the playoffs that same season, Houston tore them apart early 24-0 before Kansas City stormed back and wrecked them 51-31. Houston lost five straight meetings starting with that playoff game. Houston’s one of those teams that could compete with them, but they need more help in the trenches.

7) COLTS (2-1) – LAST WIN: 2022

Of all AFC teams, Indianapolis is the only team above .500 against Patrick Mahomes. Their only loss was in the 2019 playoffs by 18 points while allowing 31 points. It was also the only time Patrick Mahomes faced Andrew Luck at all. In Indy’s two wins, they kept Mahomes and company under 20. Tyreek Hill also wasn’t available in that matchup due to his injury in 2019 and becoming a Dolphin in 2021. Indy has an underrated defense that tends to cause Kansas City problems. And guess what? Kansas City faces Indy next season with Anthony Richardson trying to prove if he’s The guy. However, playing the regular season Chiefs is different from playing the postseason Chiefs.

6) RAIDERS (2-12) – LAST WIN: 2023

The Raiders were fully dominated by the Chiefs, but they were also within striking distance of defeating them a few times and achieved it twice. However, they have no offensive identity. Despite it all, Antonio Pierce was the most consistent with their Raiders being competitive against Kansas City. The Raiders won one with him and lost the other two games by seven points or less. The one opportunity in the last meeting was bizarre due to officiating call that was potentially a dumb mishap, but that’s beside the point. Is new head coach Pete Carroll the answer to Vegas’s uprising?

5) CHARGERS (3-11) – LAST WIN: 2021

Of all AFC West opponents, the Chargers had the best chance to defeat the Chiefs on multiple occasions. Unfortunately, the Chargers were Chargering, and the majority of those failures were on Brandon Staley. The former head coach had a leg up on them with two wins in his first season in 2021 before failing four straight times with self-inflicting play calls. Jim Harbaugh takes over as coach, but the losses continue to mount for Los Angeles. The hope is for Harbaugh and Herbert to have an answer against Kansas City while overcoming their own Chargering ways.

4) BRONCOS (2-13)* – LAST WIN: 2025 (2024 season)

Denver has an asterisk because Mahomes started his rookie season in the last game of the regular season. He took over for Alex Smith for a one-game break since the team was already playoff bound. Denver couldn’t defeat Kansas City for about nine seasons before they ended that streak in 2023. That led to two wins in the last three games even though the last game was a scrap up/desperation game. Denver may have the formula with coach Sean Payton to defeat the Chiefs more often, but they must continue building their offense.

3) RAVENS (1-5): LAST WIN – 2021

Lamar Jackson matches the Ravens record against Patrick Mahomes all-time. His one win was in a fourth quarter comeback in 2021. Three seasons later, Baltimore seemed too optimistic to outplay Kansas City. Unfortunately, that unfortunate Zay Flowers turnover in the AFC title game and Isaiah Likely toeing the line in Week 1 were costly losses that Baltimore will never shake off. Lamar probably has the worst nightmares to overcome if they want to go to the Super Bowl someday.

2) BENGALS (3-4): LAST WIN – 2022

Joe Burrow’s the bane of Kansas City’s existence…when healthy. The times he didn’t play against them was in 2018 when Andy Dalton was still the guy and 2023 due to Burrow’s hand injury. The 25-17 loss that year was the biggest margin between Burrow and Mahomes. When Burrow was active, those games were decided by three points or less. A healthy Joe Burrow and their hopeful revamped defense are keys for Cincinnati to rattle Kansas City.

1) BILLS (4-5): LAST WIN – 2024

Next to Cincinnati and Baltimore, Buffalo had the best shot at stopping Kansas City from going to the Super Bowl. For god sakes, Josh Allen’s 4-0 in the regular season against them. But regular seasons don’t win you Super Bowls. It only gives you the opportunity. Unfortunately, they couldn’t get the job done again whether the calls were involved or not. Josh Allen’s 0-4 all-time in the playoffs against Patrick Mahomes’ Chiefs and were the third team after the Ravens (2023) and the Bengals (2022) to fail in stopping them from reaching the Super Bowl. Unlike Jackson and Burrow, these playoff losses will haunt Josh Allen and the Bills for a long, long while.

BONUS) THE NFL

I thought I would do this for farce, but it may not be funny to everyone. The NFL seems to favor the Chiefs being successful whether it’s the officials, Roger Goodell making the calls for the officials to make those calls, or someone behind closed doors that wants to see Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid, Travis Kelce, and Chris Jones succeed. Oh, and Taylor Swift dating Travis Kelce, having millions to billions and being a Chiefs fan may have led to the league’s influence in guaranteeing the Chiefs’ Super Bowl appearance for a 3-Peat. It could all be nonsense, but it could also be a conspiracy. Oh well. GO OKC Thunder! I’m in my offseason of football🤷🏾🌩️🏀
