BRACKET AND POWER RANKINGS

Outside of my Sooners getting carved like turkey thanks to poor offensive play, this was one of the best college football weekends so far. Alabama nearly fell to an unranked team in back-to-back weeks. Meanwhile, there were plenty of thrilling matchups, including LSU/Ole Miss, Colorado/Kansas State, Penn State/USC, Florida/Tennessee, and more. The current conference standings through half the season shows that there’s still plenty to be figured out, but just wait until we get to November.

12) SYRACUSE

Ohio State and Ryan Day wished they kept Kyle McCord because he put on a show for the Orange against NC State. However, the Wolfpack had chances to take control only to have turnover after turnover go against them. The Angry Orange enjoys their bye before traveling to Pitt for a rivalry matchup.

11) IOWA STATE

West Virginia socked Iowa State in the mouth early, but the Cyclones quickly responded with a score and a defensive stand in Morgantown. The Coal Miner gear never phased them and that probably shutdown their production for the rest of the night. Quarterback Rocco Becht continues putting on a clinic for the program that Brock Purdy did seasons ago.

10) BOISE STATE

Boise State sputtered through three quarters against Hawai’i, but that never stopped Ashton Jeanty from running for 200 plus yards once again. In two weeks, the Broncos face UNLV for control of the Mountain West.

9) TEXAS A&M

BYE WEEK

8) MIAMI

BYE WEEK

7) CLEMSON

Clemson went back-and-forth with Wake early in the game before their offense overwhelmed them while the defense stifled them. There’s not much competition for Clemson left except a road game at Pitt next month. Expect Clemson to be in the playoff conversation.

6) ALABAMA

Alabama almost cost themselves a playoff opportunity if they lost back-to-back non-ranked games. Quarterback Jalen Milroe’s turnovers were the main reasons Alabama struggled, but he eventually atoned for his mistakes. The team is in for a tough road ahead in the next three games against ranked SEC opponents.

5) OHIO STATE

Ohio State battled Oregon for 60 minutes. It could’ve easily ended badly with how well Oregon played despite missed opportunities. However, they never had a chance to end the game on a potential field goal try due to Will Howard’s lack of clock management awareness. That loss was costly with more tough games ahead.

4) PENN STATE

Penn State forced a comeback and overtime. It looked like the odds were against them at the Coliseum, but it ended on a positive note thanks to USC’s kicker missing the field goal in overtime. Give tight end Tyler Warren plenty of credit for his game too. Their next two games will decide if they’re indeed playoff contenders.

3) GEORGIA

Georgia…outlasted Mississippi State??? That doesn’t sound right. While Carson Beck and company wrecked their fellow Bulldogs, their defense struggled to slow down Mississippi State’s offense. Georgia’s defense wasn’t great in two of the last three games. They will be mightily tested against Quinn Ewers and Texas this upcoming weekend.

2) OREGON

Oregon nearly lost due to missed opportunities, but they still came out swinging against Ohio State’s defense without hesitation thanks to Dillon Gabriel. Oregon’s in position to compete for the Big Ten title game if they keep their run going.

1) TEXAS

Quinn Ewers worked off the rust to slowly, but surely carve up Oklahoma’s strong defense. Texas is currently at the top of the SEC with a chance of holding it outright if they defeat Georgia on Saturday.

HONORABLE MENTION

ARIZONA STATE AGAIN

They’re tough, they’re gritty, and they fight to the end, and are now stand at 5-1 around the top of the Big 12. Give coach Kenny Dillingham plenty of credit for building this program despite dealing with so much offseason adversity. Also, running back Cam Skattebo is a dog and a workhorse. Watch out for him in the NFL draft.

MOST DISAPPOINTED

UTAH

It’s about Cam Rising’s situation. He was hurt early in the game but was never taken off the field to be thoroughly evaluated. The fact that coach Kyle Whittingham never gave backup quarterback Isaac Wilson another chance boggles my mind. Not only does it cost Utah a win, but that potentially costs them a Big 12 title opportunity.

OKLAHOMA’S OFFENSE

As a Sooner fan, my worst nightmare of Oklahoma’s offense through EA Sports College Football in July became a reality. It was an omen when I struggled playing with them in my first season. It was mind-numbingly frustrating. Then, offensive coordinator Seth Littrell’s lack of postgame comments to his offensive players tells me that the offense is s***canned. I’m sorry for Danny Stutsman, Billy Bowman, and the rest of the defense for suffering through this…
