BRACKET AND POWER RANKINGS

The team that most impressed me was Notre Dame and USC. Notre Dame has a somewhat easier schedule the rest of the way while USC may have a defense to compliment Lincoln Riley’s offense. The team that I’m mostly disappointed with was Oregon and Florida. Oregon allowed two trick play touchdown passes and also struggled on the offensive line against Idaho. Florida State could have the biggest setback of all ranked teams this season. DJ Uiagalelei hasn’t played well in two games and the defense struggled in the trenches for two straight weeks. The amount of roster turnover is definitely showing.

This will also be my first time doing my weekly college football power rankings. This concept won’t involve shifting teams. It’ll be more focused on weekly performance. It’ll give some idea on teams that are consistently in the power rankings each week. Maybe it’ll tell which teams are likely College Football Playoff contenders. Expect more weekly posts as I continue experimenting with the power rankings.

12) IOWA

Iowa…is scoring…on OFFENSE!!! The team looked solid in their opener, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet. If they can repeat against Iowa State, watch out for the Hawkeyes as an At-Large bid.

11) MICHIGAN

The Wolverines struggled early against Fresno State before their identity came to light on the ground. They proved to have depth at running back beyond Donovan Edwards. The quarterback position is a glaring problem and must be figured out before Texas comes to Ann Arbor.

10) OKLAHOMA

Oklahoma’s defense showed plenty of motor from start to finish. I want to feel optimistic about that side, but I must see it against SEC opponents. The offense proved there’s a future for Jackson Arnold, but the concerns are on the offensive line and limited receiving corps over injuries. I can only trust the process.

9) ALABAMA

Alabama’s still Alabama. Jalen Milroe looked efficient under Kalen DeBoer and could go a long way. The run game should be a major threat to future opponents going forward.

8) USC

I still don’t respect Lincoln Riley since I’m a Sooner fan, but I will be professional and give credit where credit is due. The Trojans played well in all three phases. As a guy who loved and played offense and special teams, I got the sense that they could be special. Zachariah Branch could be an all-worldly receiver along with the other elite receivers. Mississippi State transfer running back Woody Marks put a stamp on his former SEC opponent. Quarterback Miller Moss was praised well in the offseason, especially by USC great, Matt Leinart. Moss tossed for 374 and didn’t blink. The offensive line improved after two seasons. Maybe USC could be a legitimate threat in the Big Ten after Oregon and Michigan struggled. Also, THEY FINALLY HAVE A DEFENSE??????

7) OLE MISS

Ole Miss tore apart poor old Furman. Jaxson “Darted” for over 400 passing yards and five touchdowns, and Tre Harris was responsible for 43% of those yards for two touchdowns. Expect plenty from this offense moving forward. Outside of that, Furman’s receiver Devin Hester Jr. was on the scene.

6) MIAMI

The Hurricanes went to the Swamp and hogtied some gators from start to finish. They were the better team out the gate and Pac-12 transfers Cam Ward and Damien Martinez played well in their first game along with receiver Xavier Restrepo. Unlike Clemson and Florida State, Miami looked solid.

5) PENN STATE

Despite all the hype that Pat McAfee and West Virginia laid out all week, Penn State overcame their early slow start in Morgantown and torched the Mountaineers thanks to Drew Allar and company. He actually attacked downfield with succession and the defense punished West Virginia after some time. Defense played a part despite West Virginia moving the ball early. They eventually settled in and made a nightmare out of the offense.

4) TEXAS

The Longhorns looked solid in their home game, Quinn Ewers looked great and so did Arch Manning. If the running backs hold up without any more injuries that occurred in the offseason, the team should be alright moving forward.

3) OHIO STATE

The Buckeyes worked in some new $20 million NIL players to get the ball rolling. Will Howard and Quinshon Judkins were effective in their first game together, but Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate alongside Emeka Egbuka showed the Buckeyes receivers continues showing that the offense is so dangerous.

2) NOTRE DAME

Notre Dame played some good football. It was all about the defense on both sides, but the Irish offense was better for this matchup despite the offensive line’s slow start. Quarterback Riley Leonard showed his veteran experience and him and his cohorts Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price grinded out the defense. Winning at College Station goes a long way for their confidence on a surprisingly manageable schedule.

1) GEORGIA

Georgia’s Georgia. Clemson’s offense couldn’t break past the defense for a touchdown. Georgia’s offense slowly, but surely grinded out Clemson’s strong defense after a quarter and a half. Carson Beck’s competing to where he’ll compete with Shedeur Sanders for the number one quarterback spot in the NFL next season.

HONORABLE MENTION

BOISE STATE

Boise State’s running back Ashton Jeanty ran all over Georgia Southern’s defense for a school record six touchdowns before cramps took over. The same won’t be said against Oregon’s defensive front, but optimism is there for Boise’s CFP opportunity.
