What are you good at?
There’s plenty I’m good at, but it’s hard to choose with so many. However, one thing I’ve practiced for years that has come through since living on my own: Poised. It’s an intangible talent that can be practiced through patience, and it takes a lot of patience.
I grew up in a world where I dealt with most people, friends, and family that had little to no patience, gets easily aggravated or frustrated, or stresses whether it’s a big deal, small deal, or nonsense. I dealt with it, but I learned that it causes stress on my life. During the 13 years that I lived on my own, I had some time to actually practice a little patience for myself. When COVID hit and I was unemployed and home, I learned a little bit more about myself. Prior to it, my boss told me, I surprisingly stay stoic through plenty of pressure. I dealt with a lot while working in customer service and going to school and meeting deadlines, especially in the summer with deadlines in a short time.
Once I learned what being poised was, I continued being stoic when working under pressure or not at all. I’m still practicing it while playing basketball or bowling and even playing video games when I’m down a certain number of points with either one round to go or with a few minutes left from a match. When a task or deadline’s being met at work, I’m getting it done with little to none. All it takes is just taking a deep breath and telling myself “You got this!”
Being poised takes time, but anyone’s capable of doing it. I’m currently dealing with a major situation while moving, but I’m taking a breath and just putting a plan together before doing the whole thing. I know I got this, and I’ll need plenty of poise to get everything done.
