BRACKET AND POWER RANKINGS

Week 0 features only five games, but there’s three, including my Two Underrated Teams, that could be worth watching. I’m contemplating on how I should showcase some of my Underrated Teams for next week. It’s a lot to discuss and I know not everyone wants to read through all 24 teams. I’ll have an idea by next week and post my next podcast previewing some of the important games relating mostly to them.

UCONN AT FRESNO STATE – 11AM PT/ 2PM ET ON CBS SPORTS NETWORK

First all-time meeting between UConn and Fresno State.

Let’s call this a clean slate because UConn took a year off due to COVID while Fresno State played only six games while enduring state restrictions. UConn’s playing as an Independent team for the first time since their program existed in 1979. They return veterans from the 2019 team led by running back Kevin Mensah, and they also have players, including transfer that had time to know each other during their year off last season. Fresno State returns an overall experienced group led by running back Ronnie Rivers and quarterback Jake Haener. The Bulldogs should have fans this weekend, which is a positive sign for homefield advantage. While UConn technically has more experience, the Bulldogs have more talent, starters with experience, and more game time last season. Shutting down Kevin Mensah is key for the Bulldogs to win their first home game since October 29th of last season.

HAWAI’I AT UCLA – 12:30PM PT / 3:30PM ET ON ESPN

Fourth all-time meeting between Hawai’i and UCLA.

UCLA’s 3-0 against Hawai’I all-time, but Hawai’i is 2-1 against the Pac-12 from 2019. Hawai’i returns 16-plus starters while UCLA returns 18-plus starters. UCLA has leverage with a senior-laden group, but Hawai’i tends to surprise against west coast competition. Hawai’i’s run and gun offense will challenge UCLA’s defense, which struggled the past three seasons allowing over 30 points per game and constant big plays. UCLA in return will challenge Hawai’i’s run defense, which struggled stopping teams on the ground for the past few years. Overall, the game comes down to UCLA’s defensive performance, but they should win at home.
