BRACKET AND POWER RANKINGS

NEVADA AND SAN JOSE STATE SIT ATOP THE MOUNTAIN WEST

I don’t know what’s more exciting: seeing my alma mater Nevada at the top undefeated, or this guy I keep tabs on from San Jose State named Trey Walker be at the top with the undefeated Spartans? Either way, the northern part of the West division is undefeated. San Jose State’s schedule beefs up in 2 weeks with games at Fresno State and Boise State before hosting Hawai’i and Nevada. Nevada is the same with their last four against San Diego State, at Hawai’i, and Fresno State before their meeting with San Jose State. If both by the Mountain West gods go undefeated prior to this meeting, this will be a great back-to-back matchup of the ages in the Mountain West.

CLEMSON AND NOTRE DAME SHOULD BE A GUARANTEED REMATCH

Clemson versus Notre Dame is THE Game of the Year after last night. Notre Dame played impressive and Clemson fought hard to the end with a backup quarterback. Clemson also deserved to stay in the Top 4 after the eye test proved how well they played. It’s likely to be a rematch in the ACC Title game and could have that championship feeling, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Clemson’s schedule gets easier but the road game at Virginia Tech is something to be aware of. Notre Dame’s schedule is a tad tougher. They play their last three road games at Boston College, North Carolina, and Wake Forest. Be careful Fighting Irish.

THE PAC-12 DEBUT WAS GOOD AND BAD

Don’t get me wrong. The Pac-12’s return was great. The good was Oregon crushing Stanford, watching USC’s come from behind victory against Arizona State, and Washington State debuting well under new coach Nick Rolovich with over 200 plus yards rushing. But the bad is two Pac-12 games were cancelled due to COVID. Utah versus Arizona and Washington versus Cal were victims. Washington versus Cal would’ve been a Pac-12 North statement games as Oregon plans to face them this season. I also would’ve liked to see how Utah’s offense plays with South Carolina quarterback transfer Jake Bentley. The Pac-12 has no room for error so let’s hope for some more football from the conference.

BYU, LIBERTY, MARSHALL, CINCINNATI, AND COASTAL CAROLINA ARE STILL UNDEFEATED!!!

You heard it right! They are all still undefeated…AND in the Top 25…where they belong…for now. Cincinnati and BYU represent the Non-Power 5 teams in the Top 10, but Marshall isn’t far behind 16. Coastal Carolina’s 7-0 and ranked 16. Their last three games are at Troy and home against both Appalachian State and another undefeated cohort, Liberty. Speaking of Liberty, they upset Virginia Tech after a crazy ending on two field goal attempts. Besides playing Coastal Carolina, they have another road game at NC State and that should be another exciting game for the Flames.

ACC AND SEC COULD HAVE TWO PLAYOFF TEAMS EACH

And it’s very likely too. Notre Dame’s win over Clemson puts them in the Top 4 and hopefully for good even barring the result of a potential ACC rematch with them. The SEC has three teams vying for the playoffs with Alabama at 1, and Texas A&M and Florida lurking at 5 and 6. Florida has the easiest ending schedule, A&M’s schedule is tricky, and Bama’s schedule should be decent. However, all three still play LSU, but Texas A&M and Alabama also have Auburn. Something also tells me A&M and Bama must be aware of those Tigers…But for all of this to happen, especially for the SEC, Ohio State must either lose a game or be a victim of COVID (nothing personal, just speculation).
